Healthcare staff house improves services
Mwenilondo Health Centre Management Committee chairperson Chancy Kayira says the construction of a K23 million staff house at the facility has improved service delivery.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, he said some staff members live at Ipyana and Karonga Boma which makes it difficult for them to attend to emergency cases at night, especially pregnant women and children.
Said Kayira: “But the house has accommodated an extra nurse who is now attending to patients at night, which has improved healthcare services.
“Due to shortage of staff houses, only one clinician was living at the facility and was working day and night alone.”
He said besides improving service delivery at the health centre, the house has beautified the area.
Mwenilondo Health Centre in-charge Ruth Gumbo said there are now two healthcare workers staying at the facility, which has improved the delivery of services.
She said: “The health facility has a catchment area of 11 000 people, but we also serve clients from Mwambuli, Lupembe and Ipyana.
“With this house, a nurse was assigned to the facility and we are working together.”
Gumbo also appealed to well-wishers to support the facility to meet the growing needs for healthcare services.
Karonga District Council acting director of public works Yamikani Bokosi said they constructed the house using Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) funds.
Gesd is a World Bank performance-based grant that enables councils to implement project to improve service delivery.
