Projects to improve service delivery in Blantyre—minister

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda says projects Blantyre District Council is implementing will enhance service delivery.

He said this on Wednesday after visiting the newly constructed Nancholi Health Centre, Mpemba Market shelters and Matope Bridge.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of the projects and said: “To start with the bridge, it is crucial in transforming farmers’ livelihoods as it supports them to transport their milk and produce to better markets.

“There is a stretch of over seven kilometres which is being graded to make sure our farmers do not struggle to take their produce to the market.”

Chimwendo Banda also pledged support from the government, saying the funds the district gets for District Development Funds (DDF) are not enough to implement other projects.

Blantyre district director of health and social services Gift Kawalazira said Nancholi Health Centre will serve a population of 30 000 people.

He said: “This facility is at a vantage location as it will help the community around access healthcare services closer.

“The facility will offer outpatients department and under-five services.”

A resident from Nancholi Township, Ellen Jaffu, said they travel long distances to Zingwangwa Health Centre for healthcare services.

“I will get under-five services nearby,” she said.

Blantyre District Council implemented the projects with funding from DDF, Government to Enable Service Delivery, Constituency Development Fund and Transforming Agriculture through Diversification Entrepreneurship programme
