GY puts K6m in basketball tourney

GY Imports and Exports has injected K6 million into the King and Queen of the Court National Basketball Tournament scheduled Civo and Don Bosco Basketball courts  in Lilongwe this weekend.

Sixteen teams from all the country’s regions will take part in the competition.

According to tournament director, Lisungu Moyo, who is also Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) treasurer, the North will be represented by two teams—Nkhulande and Magic Spurs Ladies.

The South will be represented by Bricks, Magang’a, Cobbe Ladies, Chanco Hawks and Lox306.

The hosts, Central Region will have nine teams—Brave

Hearts Men and Brave Hearts Ladies, Cougars Men, Cougars Women,

Mimbulu,Lady Dynamites, Bunda Ollivetes, Angels and Lady Buccs.

Champions in the men’s category will receive K1.2 million, gold medals and a trophy while runners-up will get K600 000 cash and silver medals.

In the ladies category, the champions will get K1 million, gold medals and a trophy while their runners-up will receive K500 000 and silver medals.

Basmal has since commended GY Imports and Export and Dr Print for the financial support.

“This is a welcome development. We thank GY Imports and Export and Dr Print for the support. It is clear that through such tournaments the standard of play can improve in the country,” said Moyo.

GY Imports and Exports managing director Griffin Kalua explained that their wish is to improve the sport.

Maganga are defending champions while Brave Hearts Ladies won 2016 ladies category. n
