Malawi celebrates Labour Day
Vice-President Khumbo Kachali on Monday led Malawians in celebrating the International Labour Day which falls on May 1. The day was celebrated later because it fell within the 30-day mourning period for former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika who died of cardiac arrest at the New State House in Lilongwe on April 5 2012.

The International Labour Day was set aside to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers across the world. Activities on the day started with a march to Civo Stadium where speeches were made by different people, including Kachali.
Speaking on behalf of all workers, Mary Phombeya, chief corruption prevention officer at the Anti-Corruption Bureau, said the workforce is the engine of any organisation and without commitment of workers, a country cannot achieve socio-economic development.
