Malawi Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining has hinted that results for the recently conducted airborne geophysical survey are due to be released this month.

The survey was conducted from September 2013 to August 2014 under the mining Governance and Growth Support Project with support from the World Bank and the European Union.

The comprehensive high resolution countrywide airborne geophysical survey was aimed at generating up-to-date geophysical information which will be complemented by geological and geochemical information.

Commissioner for Mines Charles Kaphwiyo informed the 2015 International Mining Indaba held in Cape Town last month that government is ready with the findings of the survey and would release them anytime this month.

Kamphwiyo, according to a latest monthly economic report by Nico Asset Managers Limited, also told the indaba that the geological survey department is also in the process of analysing several gold and nickel prospects to establish economic deposits.

He also informed the meet that the Geological Survey Department is also developing a geo-data management database to facilitate archiving, updating and dissemination of data to clients.

Malawi is in the voluntary Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and Kaphwiyo said the country’s EITI process would be guided by the multi-stakeholder group with representatives from government, industry and civil society.

EITI reports allow the country’s citizens to follow the value and price paid for the country’s natural resources from production until the money reaches government coffers.
