Merry Christmas, let peace, love prevail

Listen to this article

It is Christams Day today, December 25, when Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

It is encouraging to hear our political leaders talk about peace, love and the spirit of giving to the less privileged members of the societies we live in.

In his Christmas message, President Peter Mutharika is emphasising love among Malawians, further advising people not to indulge in a conduct likely to harm themselves or others. On his part, leader of opposition and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera advises on the need for people to give just as Jesus Christ Himself did.

Peace and love are very essential to the development of our country. It is out of continued dialogue and consensus, not unnecessary tension and squabbles, that peace and love are borne. We would urge the leaders to walk the talk.

The year 2014 was an eventful one. It is in 2014 when the country celebrated 50 years of independence. It was also in the same year that the country held the first-ever tripartite elections on May 20 that ushered in the new administration of Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party.

On the economic front, the situation has been tough, with donors who contribute about 40 percent to the recurrent budget continuing withholding their funds. This has made life difficult for many Malawians who have also been exposed to the harsh and high cost of living.

In the words of Vice-President Saulos Chilima, it is our expectation that in the New Year we will, as a nation, start thinking differently and doing things differently to move forward.

Finally, but not least, management and staff of Nation Publications Limited (NPL), publishers of The Nation, Weekend Nation, Nation on Sunday, Fuko and Nation Online (www.mwnation.com), are very grateful to our valued customers, advertisers, readers and all partners for the continued support rendered to us. We do not take this for granted.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2015.
