Potable water excites Lilongwe communities

People in Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe District have expressed excitement with piped water installed in their area.

In an interview on Tuesday, a community member Janet Masanje from Thom Village said World Vision Malawi installed a kiosk in the village which is supplying people with safe water.

She said previously, they used to drink water from a well, located a kilometre away from the village.

“The water was not clean because animals were also drinking from the same source. This put our lives in danger of suffering from waterborne diseases,” said Masanje.

On her part, Zeze Water Users Association chairperson Triza Chikuse said World Vision Malawi installed six kiosks in six villages.

“The water has improved personal hygiene in people’s homes. Again, children no longer report late for classes as they get water nearby,” she said.

About seven kilometres from where Zeze Mechanised Water System is located, World Vision installed another water system at Dzuwa Village.

A community member from Makwinja Village Lydia Chimchere commended World Vision Malawi for installing 18 kiosks in the area, including three at Nkhoma Trading Centre.

“These days we do not wake up very early in the morning to search for water because every village has their own kiosk,” she said.

Chimchere said women in the village take turns to clean the kiosk and ensure that people are taking care of the facility.

In a separate interview, World Vision Malawi director of programmes Charles Chimombo said the organisation implements such projects to improve the lives of communities, especially girls and children.

“It is important to have potable water because girls and women are the ones who suffer as they search for water,” he said.
