The Roads Authority (RA) has said there have been several challenges that have adversely affected the upgrading of the Churchill Road in Limbe,Blantyre, from Illovo head office to Midima Roundabout.

Motorists using the road have complained about the time it is taking before the road is finalised.

So far, only one lane of the dual carriageway has been completed and opened to traffic.
In response to a questionnaire, RA spokesperson Portia Kajanga said since the works are being done in an urban set-up, the implementation of the project has faced a number of challenges.
She said works delayed for close to four months as service providers relocated their services, some of which were right in the road’s corridor.

Said Kajanga: “We dug trenches for the services to speed up the relocation process after noticing that the exercise was taking too long.”

The Churchill Road, which is approximately 650 metres long, was built over 30 years ago and had outlived its economic life, hence RA floating tenders where Fargo Limited emerged the successful bidder at a contract price of K406 370 879.95.
