Taekwondo to send 2 to Brazil Olympics

Two junior taekwondo athletes, Joseph Phiri and Stain Phiri, (not related) will represent Malawi at 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil in August.

Taekwondo Association of Malawi national coach Lovemore Masinga said Stain, from Blantyre Taekwondo Club and Joseph, from Mzuzu Taekwondo Club, impressed during a course held in Blantyre in November last year.

Masinga said the two are undergoing intensive preparations for the world tournament.

Speaking in an interview from Blantyre, Stain said he is working on physical fitness so that he should scoop a good position during the Games.

“I am happy to be among the two to represent the country in Brazil this year. So far the training is going on well,” he said.

Commenting on the development, taekwondo assistant national coach Taipeni Kamanga said it is good that Malawi will take part.

“I am happy that we will be represented by two taekwondo athletes in the tournament. Looking at the calibre of these two athletes, it is our hope that they will do the country proud,” he said. n
