Tiwonge Hango is in New York, US, where he is expected to hold a fund-raising concert in aid of Maloto, a charity dedicated to bringing positive change to vulnerable children in Mzuzu.

The Thyola hitmaker, who is expected to be across the Atlantic Ocean for nearly a month, flew out on Sunday through Kamuzu International Airport, Lilongwe.

According to Hango, the tour will hit climax today when he performs with a US band.

“I am excited to make the trip. The band comprises various artists who auditioned to back me up. What’s more? I cherish the ideal of charity and Maloto has offered me an opportunity to take part in this noble cause,” said Tiwonge in an interview.

Maloto is a US-based no-profit organisation dedicated to bringing positive lasting change to Malawi, its website reads.

Its beneficiaries include Kwithu Community-based Organisation which strives to create a loving, supportive enviroment for orphaned and vulnerable children.

It also supports the education of some orphans at the upmarket Mzuzu Acadamy, the Northern Region’s first internationally accredited secondary school it helped to construct.

Tiwonge is a tutor of music at the learning institution.

The artist took off in style—releasing the video of his newest single, Mkazi Wakumudzi, two weeks ago.

While in New York, he will have a cultural exchange encounter with Nyack Public Schools.

“The organisers linked me with Nyack, which comprises a junior school and high school. They have arranged a two-week traffic which will help me to obtain new perspectives and share lessons from Malawi,” he said.

Tiwonge and his boyhood band, Tikhu, won the five-nation Music Crossroads Competition in 2004. Apart from offering the band a chance to tour Europe, the triumph earned a scholarship to study music at the prestigious centre of performing arts.
