World Vision Malawi, with support from Australia, on Friday handed over assorted items worth over K7.9 million (about $19 750) to Machinga District Council.

The items will be given out to the district health office (DHO), the district agriculture development office (Dado), police, Water and Irrigation department, among others.

The items, which include an ambulance, a Toyota Hilux pick-up, four fridges, six motorcycles, a public address system, seven bookshelves, office chairs and desks, were being used at WV Nayuchi Area Development Programme (ADP) which phased out on September 30 2013.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Machinga District Hospital, World Vision Machinga cluster manager Henry Machemba said his organisation donated the items to ensure sustainability of the programmes it was carrying out in the district.

“Through the 15-year journey World Vision has been at Nayuchi, there are positive changes in the area and in order to sustain the projects that are there, it was decided that the items that were being used be given to the community and several government departments,” said Machemba.

Machinga district health officer Florence Bwanali commended WVI for the items.

“Machinga, with a population of 571 944, has got two ambulances. One operates from the district hospital and the other one from the community. As such, it has been a challenge to be at a spot where lives need to be saved on time. The ambulance from WV has come at a right time.

“The fridges will assist in expanding immunisation programmes where there is need for vaccination while the motor cycles will complement the ambulances in health care delivery,” said Bwanali.

World Vision Southern Region operations manager Weston Kasinje said the district’s departments and community that received the items are crucial in supporting child welfare.
