Was shot last month: Mphwiyo

Ministry of Finance budget director Paul Mphwiyo, who is receiving medical treatment in South Africa after being shot at his house in Lilongwe on September 13 2013, may remain in South Africa after being discharged due to security reasons, a government source told The Nation yesterday.

The official said there is fear within government that when Mphwiyo returns, his assailants “might want to finish him off”.

Said the official: “Government is very cautious about it.”

As a preliminary security measure, the source said Mphwiyo will remain in South Africa for Lilongwe to arrange for his security detail at home.

Said the official: “Of course, government will claim that Mphwiyo is in South Africa in order to allow the reconstructed jaws to heal. But the main reason is his security because if he is killed, God forbid, then all the evidence will be buried.”

Government spokesperson, Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, and his principal secretary Grey Mang’anda were not available for comment yesterday.

But Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) spokesperson Arthur Chipenda expressed ignorance about the security fears.

Mphwiyo’s  shooting was followed by revelations of massive theft at Capital Hill and arrests of some government officials.

  1. Wait a minute. I thought the people who did this are at Maula prison? Then why would he be at risk? Does this mean that the people who did this are well known but for some other reasons are not arrested? Then why do you have those guys arrested? Something is not adding up here. After all Mphwiyo needs to come home and help sort out this mess and also has to so some explanations of his wealth

    1. some are still walking around like one of the Minister and a private lawyer so govt need to provide heavy security right here in Malawi not in RSA

  2. Hoooooo! two lies added together do not add to one truth. The man was sent to R.S.A for treatment, good for the Gov. to save life of a Citizen. I hope no Malawian would complain about that. Now he is discharged why should he remain there again? At the mean time his friends who are work ments are busy looting, how could he be comfortable hearing that other people are spoiling his work in his absence? And how secured would he be in a certain country than in his own country? At the mean time he has to hire security people of that particular country which means still draining the left over by looters. Dear ones lets speak the truth and try to shame the devil.

  3. simply put, the Government of the Republic of Malawi is now openly accepting that there is no security in Malawi. I now understand the reason why CAMA and other CSOs are demanding that the president should immediately resign. Because as the Commander-In-Chief of both the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force (the Malawi Army) it means the president has miserably failed to provide security to her own citizens then I don’t see any reason why she should cling on power. After all no-body voted for PP or JB then we absolutely loose nothing even if she resigns right away now. We are happy that Paul Mphwiyo is getting better and out of danger and that has been our prayers that he should not die so that he should come back home immediately and help the country to know the truth since he has the keys to all what is happening in our country this time. Now that God has answered our prayers someone probably in government wants to divert everything. That will not work at all. If you are trying to shield JB because she pretty knows that she is also highly involved together with Ralph Kasambara, Wapota Kitta and others in PP then you have failed. If our own Malawi Police or Malawi Army can not provide him (Paul Mphwiyo) security in Malawi, then let the Government hire FBI, CIA, or if the government want can even hire the whole British or American or Israel Battalion for the sake of Paul Mphwiyo. We don’t care at all but what we care now is the truth to prevail, nothing else but the whole truth.

  4. There is something fishy about all this. I feel let down and very disappointed with Amayi.

  5. The only reason why he must remain in SA is to avoid the Press,ACB,Police and FIU from questioning the man. Someone somewhere has something to hide and therefore hiding Paul is just the start.

  6. I am so very angry with this childish and silly reasoning. For once, I support the planned CAMA -led mass protests

  7. seriously, what are these officials at capital hill smoking? For starters, Joyce Hilda Banda knows all the assailants and their motives already. Better yet, the Police have rounded their own suspects and only one remains at large, and not in Malawi : Now, who else is there to make Mphwiyo unsafe in Malawi?

  8. Malawi siimene tikuyidziwa ija tsopano! Chimene Akuopa Mayi Hilda Banda ndi chiyani? Chonde kumalawi kuli anthu komanso mabungwe ‘anzeru osaiwalanso a Police TITHANDIZENI,

  9. I am not interested in mphwiyo remaining in RSA because I am paying the bill! I am interested in his remains and those of his accomplices!
