Blantyre Police recover K20m stolen property
Blantyre Police Station on Friday recovered assorted stolen household and office property valued at K20 million (US$39 371) from suspected criminals who terrorised Blantyre residents.
The police also impounded three saloons, one belonging to a suspect, which were being used to transport the stolen property.
Deep freezers, plasma television sets, sound mixer, computers, laptops, DVD players, printers, amplifiers, speakers, music system, monitors, office curtains, UPS, cartons of tiles and assorted groceries and other equipment are just some of the items seized by police officers during their operation.
Blantyre Police Station spokesperson Elizabeth Divala said the recovery was done on Friday night and six suspects were cornered in Chirimba, Manase and Ndirande townships following a public tip-off.
She identified the six as Samuel Phiri (27), Francis Joe Matete (30), Mathews Njoloma (32), Rodgers Henry Shaba (44), Edward Jimu (25) and Petrol Amos (31).
The six, who were using a toy pistol, are suspected to have stolen the items from Moth Club at Manase, Smile Mart at Chadzunda, SOS Children’s Club in Machinjiri and Lido Electricals at Makata Industrial Site.
The three vehicles are Toyota Carina BQ 693, Toyota Caldina LA 1345 and Toyota Corolla BN 6870.
“We are still investigating the matter because we suspect this is just part of the stolen lot. We’re doing our utmost to track down some more criminals and recover more stolen items,” said Divala.

To be frank, if we want Malawi to be safe, then the public has to play its part. We know who the robbers are because we live with them. Repo them to Police and we will have a safer and more peaceful environment. Look at all the bursts that are happening are a result of a tip off. We need more of that.
