Afro-soul singer Danny Kalima, who is Malawi’s sole nominee to this year’s All Africa Music Awards (Afrima), is appealing for local votes to ensure that he wins the Best Rn’B & Soul category for which he is nominated.

Kalima was nominated for his Lilongwe-inspired song Dusty City.

In an interview on Wednesday, the 25-year-old Music Malawi Awards (Mumas) 2015 winner noted that Malawi would benefit from these awards if he triumphed.

“For example, Malawian music is not well established abroad, so people will be interested to know more about our music. Malawian artists could get exposed through me winning the award,” he said.

He added: “All that we need is promotion and for people to believe in me and vote for me. I believe it’s possible to win; all I need now is support from the whole country because some people do not know that I have been nominated. The good thing is voting closes on November 14 so there is still time to vote for me.”

Since the nominations were announced two weeks ago, Kalima has been using Facebook and Twitter to solicit votes.

“I have also been using flyers to give to patrons everywhere I am performing. I have also used a lot of word of mouth through fellow musicians and the newspaper as well as television and radio,” he said.

Kalima said he is grateful with the support he has received from Malawians.

“I would like to thank the people who already voted and everybody who believes that I can bring the award home. And although I have no particular song doing well on local radios, I still feel confident that I will win the award,” he said.

Currently, Kalima is working on his next album and will be releasing a single next week which features BFM and Blasto. The album is expected end of next month.
