Goalkeeper coaches undergo training
At least 25 goalkeeper trainers are undergoing their first-ever Fifa goalkeepers coaching course at Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) Mpira Village in Chiwembe, Blantyre.
According to FAM technical director John Kaputa, the five-day course that started on Monday, will help the goalkeeper trainers understand their roles in making sure goalminders have the necessary techniques to avoid conceding silly goals.
“Most goalkeeper trainers we have in the country did not undergo formal training; they only rely on their experiences as former goalkeepers,” he said.

FAM says gone are the days of giving the goalkeeping department little attention as it is one of the most important positions in a team.
“In spite of that, goalkeeping department is the most important area that requires technical expertise in the football field. We have seen many goalkeepers in the TNM Super League conceding silly goals and this is a result of lack of technical ability among goal custodians.”
The course instructor, South African-based Alejandro Heredia, said goalkeeping is one area that has been neglected all over the world for years and Fifa has come up with plans to deal with the malaise.
“We will use an improved syllabus during this course,” Heredia said.
The course has attracted participation of goalkeeper coaches from all the 16 Super League teams. Some of the notable faces are former Flames goalkeepers Sibusiso Padambo, Vales Kamzere, Phillip Nyasulu and Swadick Sanudi.
Maggie Chombo Sadiki and Lukia Sanudi are the only female participants.
