Kachere Reformatory gets shot in the arm
Kachere Prison in Lilongwe, a reformatory centre for young offenders, on Sunday received a kitchen facility and other materials from well-wishers.
The materials, which include teaching and learning materials, Bibles, firewood and foodstuffs, were mobilised by a prayer group, Midnight Prayer Warriors.
The group’s coordinator TawinaKumwembe said they noted a number of challenges at the centre when they paid a visit early this year.
“We noticed a number of problems at the centre and we embarked on a mobilisation campaign for well-wishers to assist us,” she said.
Kumwembe said they first provided firewood and later more people made contributions, the latest being a new kitchen constructed by Chance for Change, a United Kingdom charity organisation.
Central Region prison commandant Yephet Chimodzi said prisons are hit with funding woes; hence, the need for well-wishers to render support.
Chance for Change country director Lois Parkinson said the organisation works with youth with challenging backgrounds such as those in conflict with the law by giving them vocational training.
He said the kitchen, worth K936 000, was constructed by youths at the centre under supervision of an experienced contractor. n
