Swed win Copa Coca-Cola trophy

South West Education  Division (Swed) have defended the Carlsberg sponsored Copa Coca-Cola schools tournament after beating Central West Education Division 2-0 on Sunday at Kasungu Community Centre ground.

Tathedwa Willard and Gift Jossam scored for Swed to ensure the cup returns to the south.

Six lady golfers to take part in Zim tourney GARRY CHIRWA SPORTS EDITOR Six local lady golfers are expected to take part in the 2016 Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union Championship this weekend at Brooke Golf Club in Harare. According to Ladies Golf Union of Malawi (LGUoM), vice-president, Connie Muguvu-Karuku, the three-day tournament will tee-off on Friday and will run up to Sunday. Apart from Muguvu-Karuku herself, others are Gudrun Egilsdottir, Elizabeth Tench, Hariet Zelda Mariani,  Shelon Marques and Catherine Matura. They are scheduled to depart tomorrow. Four of the golfers—Muguvu-Karuku, Mariani, Marques and Matura—are from Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) while Egilsdottir and Tench are from Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC).  “These ladies voluntarily registered themselves to participate in this prestigious golf event for ladies in Southern Africa .Their participation is self–sponsored and we are proud to have local ladies who are keen to gain international exposure in golf,” she said. “One of the objectives of our union is to develop upcoming lady golfers by helping them understand the game. This is a great opportunity for us to mix with other ladies in the region and learn more about the game. Apart from that, the participation in the tournament will assist in confidence-building.” The tournament has been divided into four categories—Championship, A, B, and C Divisions, Muguvu-Karuku will compete in the A Division, Egilsdottir, Tench and Mariani will take part in the B Division while Marques and Matura will compete in the C  Mchiela: We are helping to develop talents

Swed received K1 million and a trophy whereas Cwed took home K750 000.

The three-day tournament, which kicked off on Friday, saw Cwed ousting South East Education Division (Seed) 14-13 through post-match penalties in the semi-finals while Swed beat Central East Education Division (Ceed) 6-5 also through  penalties.

Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology Vincent Ghambi said his ministry is happy that this year’s edition was again a success.

“It is clear that there is abundance of talent in our schools and thanks to Carlsberg.  My request is that please consider sponsoring netball in schools as well next year,” said Ghambi.

Carlsberg Malawi marketing director Gwynth Mchiela said her company is  pleased to associate Coca Cola brand with the kids.

“Through this tournament Carlsberg is developing talent for the future using the Coca Cola brand. We are grateful to partner government in promoting sports in the country,” she said.

She also applauded the Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) for a good work in organising the tournament.

“The tournament was a success because of the good organisation by Massa and we are thankful for the efforts you put in this,” she said.

On his part, Massa general secretary Blackson Malamula expressed gratitude to Coca Cola for sponsoring the tournament for 48 years.
