Old Mutual honours Kapanga through golf
Old Mutual Malawi on Sunday honoured its former chief executive officer (CEO) Chris Kapanga by hosting a golf tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).
The investment and long-term insurance company said it thought it wise to honour its retired CEO through golf because it is a sport that he loves.
Speaking during prize presentation, Old Mutual Malawi CEO Edith Jiya said: “He also introduced Old Mutual into golf sponsorship and so we thought it wise to use the same platform to say bye.”
Jiya also expressed her delight at the 73-strongfield, saying it exceeded their expectations by far.
Taking his turn, Kapanga said he felt honoured by Old Mutual’s gesture.
“It feels great to retire and find that the employer does a gesture like this one. It shows that they appreciated my input,” he said.
And on a lighter note, Kapanga said: “I nearly missed the tournament because I twisted my knee sometime back, but I felt for this one, I had to take part and I managed to finish 18 holes and scored 30 points, which was better than most of you here.”
BSC golf captain Sam Mwale commended Old Mutual for organising the tournament to honour Kapanga, saying: “Some of us have never heard of this before and for that we say thank you.
“May I, therefore, take this opportunity to wish uncle Tofa [Kapanga] a happy retirement, as golfers we really appreciate your contribution towards the sport.”
Soppie Kaira and Roza Mbilizi won the men’s and women’s categories respectively.
It was a tight contest in the men’s category which saw the top four tying on 40 points and were separated by a countback.
Playing off 12 handicap, Kaira counted out Honest Chirwa (18h/c) who in turn, counted out Welkan Phiri (16h/c).
In the ladies category, Mbilizi (10h/c) had 39 points, four ahead of her runner-up Diana Kambale (23h/c).
The winners received a trophy and a K200 000 IntoSports shopping voucher each while the runners-up also got a trophy and K150 000 each.
Mbilizi was also nearest to the pin in ladies category whereas Teri Amaro had the longest drive. Jolly Ntaba had the longest drive in men’s category while Peter Lombe was nearest to the pin. They each went away with K100 000 shopping vouchers and trophies.
Old Mutual also presented a K200 000 cheque for the maintenance of the greens. n
