World Vision inspires girls in Mchinji District

World Vision Malawi development facilitator Yamikani Banda has asked girls in Traditional Authority Mavwere in Mchinji District to work hard in school to achieve their goals.

He said this on Wednesday when her organisation held a career guidance and role modelling session at Kabuthu Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in the district.

Said Banda: “We want to address factors that lead to school dropout among girls in the Bua-Tete area.

“We conducted a survey which shows that despite helping girls and boys with school fees, they still drop out. This shows that poverty is not the only reason girls and boys drop out, as such, we are conducting awareness on the importance of education.”

Mchinji district education office school, health and nutrition coordinator Kastern Zimomo commended World Vision Malawi for promoting education in the country.

He thanked the organisation for providing school fees to needy girls and boys in the district.

Kamwanya CDSS student, Eunice Banda, said she nearly dropped out due to lack of fees.

“I am working hard to pass Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations,” she said.

Banda urged fellow students under World Vision Malawi bursary programme to work hard to pass their examinations.

During another role-modelling session last month, Mchinji Police Station officer-in-charge Rhoda Manjolo condemned child marriages.

She said: “Let girls pursue education so that they should become productive citizens in future.

“If we marry off children, we are creating a cycle of poverty for many generations.”

Manjolo warned to deal with people who abuse children.

With funding from the Government of South Korea, World Vision Malawi is paying school fees for 130 girls and 20 boys in CDSSs under a two-year Tithandize Atsikana Aphunzire Project in the district.
