Nice tips women aspirants in Kasungu on elections
National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has urged female aspirants in Kasungu District to start preparing for the September 2025 General Elections.
Nice Kasungu programmes officer Pilirani Chaguza said this on Monday during a governance training for members of Girls on the Lead non-governmental organisation (NGO).
He said next year’s elections offer an opportunity to girls and women to participate in the political governance of the country.
Chaguza appealed to women and girls to vie for positions which could help them attain leadership in society.
He said: “The women themselves must also show interest to contest in those positions and the rest of us must help in creating a favourable environment for them to do so.
“Women’s participation in the electoral processes must not be limited to voting. Instead, they must show interest to contest at all levels.”
One of the participants, Tawonga Tembo from Traditional Authority Lukwa, described the training as an eye-opener.
“Youths are largely sidelined in development activities and their participation in politics has been through perpetrating violence at the pleasure of their masters,” he said.
The training, funded by the European Union, focused on youths as drivers of the Malawi 2063 development agenda.
Malawi Electoral Commission says voter registration for next year’s elections will start this September.
The Kasungu-based NGO focuses on girls’ empowerment through giving them business opportunities.n
