Diocese warns against school vandalism

Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church Vicar General Monsignor Laurent Dziko has warned people in Chitipa District against vandalising school property.

He issued the warning on Tuesday at Kawale Primary School in the district during the blessing and handing over of two school blocks and four teachers’ houses at the school.

The diocese also built four other teachers’ houses at St. Charles Primary School in the district.

Said Dziko: “The diocese in partnership with well-wishers such as the United States of America-based Cross Catholic Outreach sourced funds for the construction of the facilities and they need special care to serve generations.

“We don’t want vandals to damage and steal iron sheets, rim-locks and writing on the walls. Again, the community should be in the forefront in contributing towards development. Above all, let parents send their children to school to mould productive citizens.”

On his part, Dr. Steven Peck, who funded the school blocks to the tune of $120 000 (about K210 million) and teachers’ houses at $161 832 (about K283 million), said he was pleased that learners will learn in good infrastructure while teachers will have decent accommodation.

“Our aim is for the community to develop. We hope that these school blocks will motivate learners and teachers,” he said.

Kapoka Zone primary education adviser Mawaya Ntelekesha said the school blocks will decongest the classrooms as well as enhance enrolment.

“We thank the diocese and their partners. The conducive learning atmosphere will improve performance and the houses will motivate teachers. We will take care of the facilities to last long,” he said.

Kawale Primary School has about 2 000 learners.

The diocese is implementing a number of projects in its catchment districts of Rumphi, Karonga and Chitipa.
