Rights bodies call for support for older persons

Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (Manepo) have called on government, civil society organisation and citizens to invest in programmes and services that address the needs of older persons.

The two organisations made the call yesterday in a joint statement marking the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons which falls on October 1.

Signed the statement: Chijozi

In the statement co-signed by MHRC chairperson Chikondi Chijozi and Manepo executive director Andrew Kavala, the two rights bodies said investments in affordable housing, accessible health care and social support services can ensure that older persons receive the support they need.

“We would like to commend Parliament for the passing of the Older Persons Act, 2024 which subsequently came into force September 16 2024. We are optimistic that the new piece of legislation will provide the legislative and policy direction for addressing the many challenges experienced by older persons,” reads the statement.

According to Kavala, Manepo documented over 113 cases of elder abuse in 2023 with 25 of them killed and 88 harassed due to witchcraft accusations.

As Malawi prepares for the September 16 2025 General Elections, the two organisations have also urged the Malawi Electoral Commission and all stakeholders to ensure that the priorities of older persons are adequately addressed and that older persons are included in the electoral process, both as voters and candidates.

This year’s theme for International Day of Older Persons is ‘Ageing with dignity: the importance of strengthening care and support systems for older persons worldwide.”

In Malawi society, older persons are seen as custodians of wisdom and culture but they also face violations including physical abuse, discrimination and neglect.
