Mwaungulu scores on debut in DRC

Former FCB Nyasa Bullets forward Patrick Mwaungulu began life in DRC in style by scoring for his team SC Don Bosco as they beat Panda 1-0.

The midfielder, alongside his former Bullets teammate Lanjesi Nkhoma signed for DRC giants TP Mazembe, but were loaned to the second tier league side Don Bosco because their parent club failed to sign them following a two-year Fifa ban.

According to information from the club, Mwaungulu, who started for Don Bosco alongside his compatriot, scored in the 67th minute.

Football analyst Kevin Moyo described the feat as good for Mwaungulu’s career in the foreign league.

“It is good news for his confidence. It is not easy to score on your debut in a foreign land,” he said.

In an interview yesterday, Mzuzu City Hammers general secretary Benjamin Thole said they are proud of Mwaungulu’s achievement.

“Being a club that made him to be where he is, we are very proud. It has motivated players that everything is possible,” he said.

Thole said they also benefited from his move to DRC as Bullets honoured a 10 percemt sell agreement of K5 million.

TP Mazembe representative Felix Ngamanya Sapao, who facilitated the deal, commended Mwangulu, saying he has a bright future.

He said: “The boy is proving himself to be a star in Lubumbashi. Even the TP Mazembe president [Moise Katumbi], in my last meeting told me Patrick will be taken to Europe in the next 18 months. He watched him in training.

“Patrick has a football brain, and Lamine Ndiaye,   the TP Mazembe coach, has been working on his weaknesses. He only started training with Don Bosco on Tuesday. He was under Lamine until Tuesday.”

But former TP Mazembe midfielder, Joseph Kamwendo who at some point was loaned to the team, feared that the move could affect them psychologically.

“Regardless of the technicality that led to their loan move, the players will be affected mentally., I think Don Bosco is a small team considering the two players’ quality, they deserved better,” he was quoted as having said.

Mwaungulu and Nkhoma went for trials alongside Mighty Mukuru Wanderers captain Lawrence Chaziya, but his deal collapsed.
