Centre boosts Liwonde National Park’s profile

African Parks has expressed excitement with the reopening of the Liwonde Environmental Education Centre, describing it as a vital hub for growing conservation awareness.

The centre, which offers camp sessions, media presentations and workshops for students, teachers and community groups, reopened in 2024 with upgraded facilities designed to provide dynamic and interactive learning experiences.

A statement from African Parks yesterday said the centre, which attracts visitors from over 600 kilometres, is part of a broader educational support network being developed at Liwonde National Park as well as Majete and Nkhotakota wildlife reserves.

“The revitalised centre has quickly become a focal point for a diverse range of educational activities. Children are immersed in engaging camp sessions while local communities gather for important discussions,” reads part of the statement.

According to the statement, hostel accommodation is one of the significant additions to the centre which has proven invaluable in allowing students to extend their stay and forge a stronger connection with unique ecosystems and wildlife.

A student from Namandanje Community Day Secondary School in Machinga is quoted in the statement as having said: “The invaluable lessons I have learned at Liwonde Environmental Education Centre have ignited my ambition and given me the tools to achieve my goals.”

Another student from Namabvi Primary School is also quoted in the statement as having said: “I found the facilitators’ lessons on environmental conservation very engaging.”
