Karonga Prison inmates appeal for resource centre

Karonga Prison inmates have asked stakeholders and well-wishers to donate television sets, decoders and a library to the facility to enable them to follow political party campaigns ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.

They said this on Saturday during a civic education session the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust conducted at the facility.

Speaking on behalf of the inmates, Steven Msukwa said the meeting provided them with a platform to know more about Smartmatic and election management devices (EMDs).

He said: “We were also able to ask questions on pertinent matters concerning the general election.

“However, we appeal to stakeholders for provision of  a resource centre equipped with a television set with fully subscribed decoder and a library equipped with newspapers to enable us follow the campaign trails.”

On her part, Karonga Prison officer-in-charge Emily Banda hailed Nice Trust for the initiative, saying inmates also have the right to vote.

“Our institution is open to stakeholders to engage with these bonafide Malawians who for various offences are confined here. However, they need information related to the general election,” she said.

Karonga Nice Trust programmes officer Nathan Sakala said they took the voter and civic education session to inmates to make the elections inclusive.

“Talks are in progress with the officer-in-charge to revamp a resource centre to enable these inmates follow whatever is happening out there,” he said.
