DPP dragged to court over Midima primaries
Two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentary aspirants have challenged the party’s decision to declare its director of elections Jean Mathanga as the DPP candidate for Chiradzulu Midima Constituency.
The aspirants, Felix Namisawo and Friday Namaona, filed a notice of application for an interlocutory injunction expected to be heard in the High Court in Blantyre tomorrow.

In an interview yesterday, Namisawo said: “The case will come up in court on Thursday June 26 [tomorrow] so I cannot comment.”
According to the application, the two claimants are seeking an order suspending the DPP’s decision to disqualify them from the party’s primary elections.
They are further praying for an order suspending the DPP’s declaration of Mathanga as the party’s parliamentary candidate.
The claimants also want the court to restrain the DPP or its agents from enabling Mathanga to be treated by the Malawi Electoral Commission as the party’s candidate for the constituency until the final determination of the matter.
They have further asked the court to restrain Mathanga from submitting nominations papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) or contesting as the DPP candidate in the parliamentary elections.
Mathanga did not pick up the phone when we tried to contact her yesterday.
The DPP was supposed to hold primary elections in Chiradzulu Midima on April 24 but failed due to disagreements and disruptions.
In a letter dated June 9 2025, DPP director of legal affairs Chipiliro Mpinganjira informed Namisawo and Namaona that the party had resolved to disqualify them for their alleged role in disturbances.
