PP launches manifesto, election campaign today

Former president and People’s Party (PP) leader Joyce Banda is today set to launch her party’s manifesto and campaign for the September 16 2025 General Election.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, PP spokesperson Ackson Kalaile Banda said the manifesto, to be launched at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe this morning, is grassroots-focused and builds on the party’s success story while in government from 2012 to 2014.

He said PP has invited other political parties and donors to witness the manifesto and campaign launch.

“PP was once in government and you are aware of the remarkable achievements during our time in government with Dr. Joyce Banda as the president. We have a manifesto which builds on our legacy but also responds to emerging issues,” said Kalaile Banda.

Speaking in NationOnline’s The Candidate programme, Joyce Banda said Malawi is almost at the same point it was when she took over power in line with constitutional order following the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012.

She said at the time, the country faced challenges such as forex and fuel shortages and power outages which she managed to fix within a short time.

“For me, what matters, to resolve the challenges facing the country, is leadership. I have fixed this country before and I will fix it if given the opportunity to lead,” said Banda, who also bragged that PP was the only party without a record of perpetrating violence.

She said she strongly feels that Malawians are still in love with her leadership and she remains committed to serve the people as she has always done.

The PP manifesto launch comes two days after President Lazarus Chakwera and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) launched their manifesto and campaign at Bingu National Stadium in a lavish style.

While the cost for the launch is unknown, MCP is on record to have declared an expenditure of over K1 billion for its convention last August.

By close of business on Friday, 19 candidates had collected nomination papers from the Malawi Electoral Commission signalling their intention to compete for the presidency in the September elections.
