Bullets top first-round victories

FCB Nyasa Bullets registered the highest number of wins in the first-round of the TNM Super League despite finishing second on the log table to their arch-rivals Mighty Wanderers.

The People’s Team won 11 games, one more than the Nomads, but concluded the first-round with 34 points, a point behind Wanderers.

However, apart from winning the first-round, the Nomads boast of being the only team that did not lose a match.

Wanderers also conceded the least number of goals, seven, followed by Bullets who let in eight.

Bullets scored the highest number of goals, 33, eight more than Silver Strikers who are second while Wanderers netted 23 goals.

But both Nomads’ coach Bob Mpinganjira and his Bullets counterpart Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda had reservations on the statistics.

Said Mpinganjira: “Although we have finished the first-round at the top and without a loss, we are far from being in the comfort zone because only a point separates us and Bullets.

“So, there is still a long way to go and as it is, the race is still open.

“We also need to improve in attack. We have good strikers, but we have been affected by injuries and that could prompt us to beef up our attck; otherwise, we are OK.”

On his part, Mponda said: “It’s good that we scored many goals, but we lost three games, which isn’t that good. We need to be consistent.”

The Bullets gaffer hinted at beefing up his squad, saying: “Defensively and upfront, we need to add the numbers.”

Bullets’ lanky Nigerian forward Babatunde Adepoju tops the scorers’ chart half-way the contest, with eight goals.

Rookies and table-anchors Songwe Border United were the most generous team, having registered the highest number of losses, 13. They also did not win any match.

The Ndenga Boys scored the least number of goals, five, and conceded the most goals, 42.

But their general secretary Palisha Swira said they are optimistic of surviving relegation as they will be beefing up their squad with 10 new players.

Chitipa United had the highest number of draws, seven.
