Celebrated local musician Lawi says Malawians are in for a musical experience as American R ‘n’ B star Brian McKnight is set to perform in the country for the first time on August 1 2026 at Game Haven in Bvumbwe, Thyolo.
Speaking during a presser in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Lawi said the show has been organised by DBR Alliance in collaboration with Lawi Group to offer a premium entertainment experience to fans while promoting Malawi and a destination for music, tourism and culture.
The Lilongwe hitmaker said the concept of the music concert and venue have been influenced by the need to give fans a different experience from the usual concepts of a music show.
He said most big shows in the country are usually held in Lilongwe, leaving Blantyre and surrounding areas with fewer opportunities to enjoy such events.
“We deliberately chose Game Haven in Thyolo because we want to offer something unique while allowing fans to experience something different that Malawi has to offer,” he said.
Lawi added that the venue was chosen to complement tourism efforts in the country as the event will not only focus on music but also on promoting Malawi as a destination for culture and tourism.
“This is not just a concert. It is a full experience where people can enjoy the scenery, hospitality and attractions Malawi has to offer,” he said encouraging fans to take time to visit tourist sites in the district.
Lawi explained that negotiations to bring McKnight started in 2025 and have involved partners from Malawi and abroad, including Malawians based in the United States and a South African company.
He also confirmed that the contract is already signed and everything is in place ahead of the show.
“We are now at the stage of full marketing. Everything is done. We are just waiting for August 1 and Brian McKnight will perform in Malawi,” said Lawi.
Media liaison for the event, Joab Chakhaza said Malawians should expect a special experience, saying everything about the event has been carefully planned.
He said fans can treat the event as a weekend gate-away and plan a full experience to enjoy excursions, explore tea estates, go hiking, enjoy wildlife viewing and experience the natural beauty of the region before the main performance.
Brian McKnight is a multi-platinum American R ‘n’ B singer with over 30 years in the music industry. He has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and is known for hits such as Back at One, Anytime and One Last Cry.
