Kasungu Municipality rolls out sanitation campaign
Kasungu Municipal Council has launched a municipality-wide sanitation campaign to improve waste management and promote public hygiene.
The council’s mayor Hastings Nyirongo launched the campaign on Saturday and called on businesspeople and residents to support the initiative by adopting proper waste disposal practices and help keep the municipality clean.
He urged business owners to mount dustbins inside and outside their premises to discourage indiscriminate waste disposal.

“Every business owner has a responsibility to keep their surroundings clean. We encourage businesses to place dustbins outside their shops and within their premises so that people should dispose waste properly instead of littering our streets,” said Nyirongo.
The mayor said the council is also strengthening its waste management system through the procurement of a waste management vehicle, which will improve refuse collection and transportation across the municipality.
Said Nyirongo: “This will improve the way we manage waste. Some parts of the municipality do not have enough dustbins and this can undermine our efforts to keep Kasungu clean.”
Taking his turn, Kasungu Municipality legislator Noel Mkubwi (independent) described the campaign as a timely initiative that supports the municipality’s aspirations of attaining city status.
“Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. If we are serious about developing Kasungu to attain city status, we must play our part in keeping our environment clean,” he said.
A resident Jonathan Kamanga said the campaign is crucial in addressing sanitation which is crucial for public health.
“We need collaboration to ensure a clean environment which is crucial for businesses,” he said.
The campaign is being implemented in line with President Peter Mutharika’s Executive Order No. 2 of 2026 which requires public places, workplaces and schools across the country to install and maintain proper sanitation
