Malawian sprinter Asimenye Simwaka won’t be available for the Scorchers’ second fixture against Egypt at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) after progressing to the finals of both the women’s 200 and 400 metres (m) at the Commonwealth Games underway in Glasgow, Scotland.
The athlete is scheduled to compete in the women’s 400m finals today before returning to the track for the 200m finals tomorrow.
The Malawi Defence Force forward qualified for the 400m semi-finals after clocking 54:16 on Tuesday and the 200m yesterday in 23:60 seconds.

Malawi Olympic Committee general secretary Henry Sakala said Simwaka will be able to leave Glasgow immediately after completing her final event, in line with a new policy for Team Malawi.
“In the past, athletes were required to remain in the Games Village until the closing stages of the Games. This time, they are expected to take the next available flight home immediately after their last event,” he said.
Football Association of Malawi operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka said they had hoped that Asimenye would at least be available for the second fixture against Egypt on Saturday in Morocco, but it was now impossible for the athlete to be in Morocco by then.
He said Simwaka’s availability for the Scorchers’ final Group C match against Zambia on August 5 will also depend on whether Malawi progresses to the Wafcon quarter-finals by the time she returns from Scotland.
