Malawi National Football Team coach Kalisto Pasuwa has granted maiden call-ups to five players in his 31-player provisional squad ahead of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.
Pasuwa made the announcement yesterday during a press conference at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre as the Flames prepare to face South Sudan and Angola.
The new faces are Blessings Kanowa of Nankatsu SC in Japan, Jorden Kamanga of Zacatepec FC in Mexico, Wales-based Shaquille Gwengwe of Newport County and Adiel Kaduya of Mustangs University in the USA alongside local-based players Peter Ng’ambi ob Mighty Wanderers and Ajussa Kalowa of Blue Eagles.
Among the selected players, 19 are foreign-based while 12 are locals.
Pasuwa said they have been monitoring the players and their impressive performance was the key for their consideration.
“We were talking to their coaches and watching them during competitive matches,” he said.
“We were very clear with the selection criterion that we wanted disciplined, hardworking and talented players. We expect them to be punctual, committed to training and respectful to both teammates and officials.”
Pasuwa said this after it was recently reported that some players previously sneaked out of camp to engage in deplorable activities during the recent Four Nations Tournament.
Malawi will play South Sudan on September 23 and Angola on October 6.
