“Take good care of your hair during winter”

Listen to this article

Winter weather can be rough on your hair, causing breakage and limp strands. Your hair easily becomes dry during this time of the year from the dry indoor heating and the dry cold weather outside. Give your locks a little extra care during this season to ensure that they do not get damaged.

Since we spend less time in the sun at this time of the year, the natural highlights nature paints into our hair become less noticeable and it loses its lustrous look. This lead to dull, lifeless hair.

Adding moisture is especially important at this time and a major oversight by many people. It is especially essential if you have had any chemical work on your hair. Look for a conditioner with cetyl alcohol.  It’s the best moisturising agent out there and is derived from coconut.

Most people can get away with a good moisturising conditioner.  If your hair is very damaged or dry, look for a moisturising shampoo like Olive or Restore.

Hair is denser than skin. The layers of the cuticle are difficult to penetrate. Once you have used a good product that does not penetrate and moisturise the hair, you want to be sure to lock that moisture in.  If you don’t close the cuticle, the moisture won’t do you much good, a cold or cool rinse helps close the cuticle down and seal in the moisture.

Try rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar to lock moisture in. It leaves your hair with a fresh clean smell as well.  Let it sit on the hair for a few minutes, then rinse with cool or cold water. Apart from giving your hair an extra shine, apple cider vinegar contracts the cuticle and locks not only moisture but colour as well for those of you who have colour treated your hair.
