Barely two ‘weeks after pumping K1 million ($4 000) into Phalombe District Football League, Mulli Brothers Limited (MBL) have announced that they will sponsor the Mulanje District Football League to the same tune.

The sponsorship will be launched on Sunday at Mulanje Boma Park. The ceremony will be presided over by the MBL managing director Leston Mulli and FAM president Walter Nyamilandu is expected to attend it.

Chonde Madrid and Lujeri Estate will play in the launch game.

MBL human and administration manager Chris Kamphinda Banda confirmed the development saying it is part of their corporate social responsibility.

“We understand Mulanje has a league sponsored by the mountain conservation trust, but it only covers areas close to the Boma. Our league will cover the whole of Mulanje. This is because we want to give all aspiring football players in the district a chance to showcase their skills,” said Kamphinda Banda.

Southern Region Football League (SRFL) chairperson Raphael Humba thanked MBL for the gesture saying it will play a vital role in football development.

“Football can only develop in the country if we have competitions at all levels, but, of late, we did not have competitive football at the grass roots such as the districts. We thank Mulli for coming in and appeal to other companies to help us fund other districts. Of course, we are still in talks with Mulli that they should extend the sponsorship to other districts, but other companies should come in as well,” said Humba.

The development means the Southern Region now has three district leagues sponsored to the tune of K1 million. The other one is the Thyolo league, which is sponsored by James Chuma.
