Queens fire warning shot
Malawi Queens trounced neighbouring Zambia 75-32 to fire the warning shot to inaugural Netball Diamond Challenge hosts and rivals South Africa.
The margin has widened by 20 as Queens hammered Zambia 56-22 during the African Netball Championship in Tanzania in May.
Supersport.com described Queens’ performance at the Heartfelt Centre in Pretoria as “showing why they wear the crown in Africa with a fast and furious display.”
Queens faced Botswana last night and take on the Spar Proteas today in the last preliminary round match of the round robin competition. The rivals will likely also meet in the final on Saturday.
Malawi are ranked fifth in the world rankings, one step higher than South Africa whereas Botswana are 16th. Yesterday, the Queens coach Griffin Saenda was quoted as saying his charges are well-prepared for a tough contest.
“You will get to see one of our best performances yet. We have a blend of the youth and the experienced ones and look forward to the challenge. We had just finished our domestic competition and when we got the invitation for this tournament, we also spent 10 days in camp,” Saenda told www.supersport.com
South Africa opened their campaign with a 55-26 victory over Botswana on Wednesday.
The Netball Diamond Challenge, an initiative of sports minister Fikile Mbalula, is a four-day competition between continental rivals South Africa, Malawi, Botswana and Zambia.
