Community leaders in Karonga District have commended the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) for empowering them to fight corruption.

In an interview on Wednesday after a two-day orientation in the district, Karonga Federation chairperson Noah Simwaka said as a representative of the minority group, he found the training helpful.

He said: “Corruption retards socio-economic development in a country and it affects everyone, including minority groups.

Mwale: Corruption affects service delivery

“We, therefore, will report any suspected corrupt practices to authorities.”

Karonga District Pastors Fraternal chairperson Pastor Grevazio Liwewe said as men of God, preaching against corruption is important from a religious, moral and ethical perspective.

He said: “Corruption goes against the values of honesty, integrity and fairness and can harm individuals and society. By preaching against corruption, the clergy provide moral and ethical guidance to their followers.

“Additionally, corruption perpetuates inequality and injustice as it advances favouritism for the privileged few at the expense of the marginalised majority.”

ACB principal public education officer Edward Kamvabingu said they targeted the youth, women, people with disability and the clergy in the orientation on the fight against corruption.

“These groups will help to mould people into responsible citizens with integrity and good morals to desist from corruption,” he said.

EAM Karonga district advocacy officer Fumbanani Mwale said they are working with targeted groups such as the youth and women to help conduct awareness on dangers of corruption.

“Corruption affects service delivery and the most affected are women, the youth and people with disabilities; hence, training these groups to join the fight,” he said.

With funding from Germany-based Bread for the World, EAM is implementing Churches United for Peace, Justice and Electoral Governance in Malawi project in the district.
