Accountants in the country have voted for consumer rights activist John Kapito as the 2013 most influential Malawian for his gallant fight in leading an economic revolution.

A professional accountants body, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam), asked its members to vote for the most influential personalities.

The consumer rights activist was followed by entrepreneurship activist Henry Kachaje on position two and business captains Thom Mpinganjira and Professor Matthews Chikaonda shared position three as published in Icam’s latest edition magazine of 2014, Volume 2 Issue 1.

The magazine predicted that in 2014, the Kapito factor is likely to be tapped on by some politicians as the nation heads to polls on May 20, adding the consumer activist will remain a government watchdog both before and after elections.

Reads the magazine: “He remains a force that any government in power has to watch with keen interest, fear and love as well.”

The magazine said some of the Icam members who voted for Kapito said he leads the pack of the 2013 most influential on the basis of his ability to champion consumer rights in the country and that when he speaks the government listens.

The magazine recognised Kapito as a dominant figure in Malawi’s economy, adding the consumer activist has to most people been the last man standing and keep on fighting among all civil rights activists who were once outspoken.

The accountants’ magazine said Kapito organised demonstrations in the light of the increasing high cost of living.

On Kachaje, Icam summed him up for his frank talk on the ailing economy.

The magazine said Mpinganjira, an outstanding entrepreneur and a chartered accountant, stands toe to toe with Chikaonda, a distinguished economist.

The number of the votes for the two was the same.
