Airtel Malawi has launched the country’s first-ever mobile music competition, which will see the winner pocketing K14 million.

Called Airtel Trace Music Star, the competition is a partnership between Trace Music Star and international music icon Akon.

Trace and Airtel Malawi’s aim are to identify and reward the best singing talents among Airtel Malawi participating mobile subscribers, according to the company’s managing director Heko Schlittke.

“This competition seeks to unearth the next fantastic musical talent. We are giving that platform so that someone should be discovered.

“Everybody can join the competition as long as you have talent. It’s a matter of personal choice and, therefore, we have no problems with whosoever joins, if you feel like you have what it takes, you give it a shot. All we are doing is making it very easy for people as they can do it anywhere they are as long as they have an Airtel line and have K50 in their phone,” explained Schlittke.

Asked if the competition will not be prone to abuse by their customers as well as established artists because of the way it has been structured, Schlittke said: “If someone is feeling that despite having a prosperous career, wants to enter the competition fair and good for them. But you would be surprised as to how many of those established artists would actually enter because of running the risk of being rejected.”

Judges comprise a team of musicians, producers and experts from Trace music channel.

To join the competition, one has to call Airtel Trace Stars number 59911 between the October 7 and December 10 2014.

The Malawi winner will compete with the rest of Africa for the top prize of $50 000 (K21.7 million) alongside a recording deal with Kon Live, a distribution label through Universal Music Group.
