Excitement is mounting for the nomination show of the African Movie Academy Awards which for the first time will be hosted in Malawi by President Joyce Banda. It is expected that African actors such as Aki na Popo will be on Malawi soil next week.

In an interview monitored over MBC Tv CEO of Amaa Peace Anyiam-Osigwe said the nomination show will pull together film talents from all over Africa including Nollywood favourites such as Aki na Popo, and Rita Dominic who has already been to Malawi under the auspices of MultiChoice Malawi.

According to a statement released on the Amaa website, this year more films were entered for the awards and the nomination show will be interesting to watch.

This also puts Malawi’s own film makers such as Shemu Joyah on edge as they await nomination of their films.

“I entered The Last Fishing Boat for the awards and I am anxiously waiting for the gala next week since for the first time it will be in Malawi,” said Joyah.

He said for the gala to be held in Malawi it becomes a great opportunity for the Malawi film industry.

Joyah’s Season of a Life is a recipient of an Amaa and one of its actresses Tapiwa Gwaza also holds an Amaa award.

He explained that film pundits in Africa enter their films for the awards and they are categorised by a jury after it goes through the three stages.

According to the Amaa website the awards celebrate their 10th edition this year.

A total of 671 films were submitted this year, compared to an average of 300 plus that were entered in previous editions.

It is not known who else has submitted films from Malawi apart from Joya.
