Archbishop Ziyaye goes back to Lilongwe Archdiocese

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Tarcizio Ziyaye to head Lilongwe Archdiocese replacing Archbishop Remi-Ste Marie who retired on Wednesday.

No immediate replacement for Ziyaye was announced.

The announcement came from the Apostolic Nunciature [Vatican Embassy] in Malawi on Wednesday.

Reads the letter: “The Apostolic Nunciature [Vatican Embassy] in Malawi informs that His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed His Grace Msgr Tarcisius Gervasio Ziyaye, to be Archbishop of Lilongwe, transferring him from the Archiepiscopal See of Blantyre…His Grace Msgr. Remi Joseph Gustave Sainte Marie, M.Afr., hitherto Archbishop of Lilongwe, will retire as he reached the canonical retirement age of 75.”

Episcopal Conference of Malawi deputy secretary general Father Emmanuel Chimombo said yesterday that there was no immediate replacement for Ziyaye.

Meanwhile, Blantyre Archdiocese will continue operating under Auxiliary Bishop Montfort Stima.

Ziyaye was born on May 19 1949 and hails from Mchinji District.

He was ordained priest on August 14 1977 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Dedza Diocese in 1992.

On November 11 1994, he became Bishop for Lilongwe Diocese and appointed Archbishop of Blantyre on January 23 2001.
