One of Malawi’s major donors, the USA has challenged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to build confidence of the electorate ahead of the 2014 polls.

Speaking in an interview on the eve of US’s 237th Independence Day today, Acting Ambassador Lisa Vickers said: “MEC must build the confidence of the electorate with transparent processes, accurate information, and also strive for a peaceful election,” she said

Recently, MEC accredited bodies to help with voter education, but the actual work is yet to start as the electoral body is in the process of training these service providers.

“The strategy for civic education is detailed and appropriate but implementation of strategies is sometimes elusive,” said Vickers.

This year, the US is celebrating independence under the theme “inspiring women.”
