The Livingroom Cafe art exhibition aptly labelled ‘Life is Beautiful’ has raised K380 000 in aid of people with disabilities through the Development and Integration of Persons with Disabilities (DIPD).

Different artists joined hands in holding the exhibition that has been described as a success by the organisers.

“We were able to raise over K380 000 (about $950) from raffles, selling, auction of arts and donations, equivalent to almost USD$1 000. This will ensure the expenses of the weekly rehabilitation visit will be covered in the next few months, and probably some equipment and facility like cane or special needs chair be made. There were so many people gave their hands to make it a success,” said one of the organisers, Coffee Wang.

Over 150 people attended the exhibition that saw 32 pieces on display.

Over 20 pieces were exhibited while two were auctioned. The top piece, titled Tadpoles, a collaborative finger art by DIPD volunteers and some of the kids with disabilities, was bought by Robin Irvine at K60 000 (about $150).

“We’re able to sell and auction out more than 20 pieces of art work, all of the collaborative art from the kids with disabilities were sold, I can already see their smiling faces in my mind. It means a lot to them to know there are people who appreciate their arts, and care about them,” said Wang.

Artist Kizito Chikoko, who came all the way from Dedza to attend the event and had a piece auctioned, said it was an unforgettable night.

“Having spent my entire life in a village in Dedza, I had never seen an art exhibition, and never dreamed there will be so many azungu get together to see my work,” said Chikoko.
