Blantyre theatre lovers enjoyed an all family treat when Damascus restaged their Chichewa play Chikondi cha Mayi which was initially premiered last year on October 20.

In the play, the protagonist, a young man gets stuck in a dilemma of love versus duty to family in a society with corrupt moral values, greed and hatred.

Some scenes have been changed which make the play very exciting.

This time around the director gave the play a fresh touch by including some scenes which offered comic relief to the tragedy.

Despite this being second time that the ensemble is performing at Nanzikambe Arts Café, it suffered from low patronage.

Speaking to The Nation, Damascus Theatre Company director Landson Chingeni, who also wrote and directed the play, said their company restaged the play because of demand from their audience.

“We have been receiving overwhelming requests to restage our play, so we thought it wise to give our audience what they want, and we are very excited to give them that” said Chingeni.

The performance was spiced by stand-up comic routine from Mr Malawi, who mimicked the former president Bingu wa Mutharika, poetry from Joseph Madzedze and Sena poetry from Snowden Tembo.
