Machinga Council, partners agree to develop district

Machinga District Council has urged development partners to come up with interventions that will complement the council’s efforts to deal with socio-economic challenges in the district.

Machinga district director of planning and development Noel Dakamau said this on Wednesday when the district and developmental partners signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to ensure proper service delivery in the district.

Chimombo: CSOs should work with councils

He said: “Most families have been affected by hunger and they are desperate and looking for various interventions from both the council and non-State actors.

“As councils, we have gaps in the service delivery which could easily be filled by partners. We do have our own bureaucracies that delay service delivery and  we rely on partners.”

Machinga District Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Network chairperson Belinda Chimombo said she was upbeat that the MoU will ease coordination between the council and organisations.

“Some CSOs have a tendency of working in the district without the knowledge of the council officials. Again, some of these CSOs claim to implement projects in the district when they are not there on the ground,” she said.

Non-Governmental Organisation Regulatory Authority Machinga district services officer Claudia Ngoma said they encourage NGOs to sign MoUs to enhance cooperation, transparency and accountability for projects they are implementing
