Leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Atupele Muluzi has refuted assertions that he a meeting with Malawi President Joyce Banda on Sunday in connection with electoral alliances or possibility of being the People’s Party (PP) running mate in the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

Atupele addressed a press conference in Lilongwe yesterday in which he confirmed that the meeting took place, but discussed ongoing investigations into the Capital Hill cash-gate in the face of threats by donors to suspend or delay budgetary support.

“I have never had discussions with Banda or any member of PP on alliances or to become running mate,” stated Muluzi.

On his meeting with Banda, Muluzi said as a political leader he wanted to know clear measures government has taken and the way forward after Parliament rises on Friday.

Meanwhile, Muluzi has said he would not take any legal action against an Indian company Sai Balaji Enterprise and its representative Saritha Lukkakula which claims that he signed on behalf of Malawi government worth 137 000 Euro (about K72 million) for carrying out a report and advert on the Malawi economy.

Muluzi served as minister for Economic Planning until November last year.

Muluzi has instead implicated his former principal secretary Ted Sitimawina in the saga.

Sitimawina yesterday said he would not say anything.
