Big guns avoid each other in Carlsberg Cup

Big guns have avoided each other in the first round of the Carlsberg Cup national phase following the draw held yesterday at FAM’s Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe.

The top eight teams from last season’s league standings were seeded from the first-round and will join the party in the round of 16.

The eight teams are defending champions Moyale Barracks, Silver Strikers, Kamuzu Barracks, Mafco, Blue Eagles, Mighty Wanderers, Red Lions and Big Bullets.

The others—Azam Tigers, Epac FC, Blantyre United, Civo United, Airborne Ragers, Chikwawa United and Karonga United will play from the first-round which also has nine teams that qualified from the regions. These teams are Bvumbwe Reaserch, Ndirande Icons, Zomba United (South); Dedza Young Soccer, Support Battalion and Kasungu Medicals (Centre); Chilumba Barracks, Eagle Strikers and Mzuzu City Rangers (North).

According to FAM competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka, the national phase is slated to start this weekend with the finals scheduled for July 28.

“Other games will be played mid-week so that we should finish the tournament as planned,” said Zakazaka.

The draw was conducted by FAM liaison officer James Sangala and Carlsberg Malawi’s events coordinator Jibu Nyirenda.

The first-round is as follows: Tigers vs Bvumbwe; Zomba United vs Blantyre United; Dedza Young Soccer vs Karonga United; Kasungu Medicals vs Epac FC; Ndirande Icons vs Eagle Strikers; Chikwawa United vs Mzuzu City Rangers; Chilumba Barracks vs Support Battalion and Airborne Rangers vs Civo United.
