The often marginalised blind and partially athletes will have an opportunity to showcase their skills on July 27, when the Malawi Paralympics Committee (MPC) hosts the 2013 Presidential Initiative for Sports Athletics Championship.

The games will take place at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe, MPC vice-general secretary George Luhanga said on Friday.

Government will pump in K800 000 for the day-long competition split in 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres for the partially blind.

The blind, helped by guiders, have their race in 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres, Luhanga said. Prize money will be decided once MPC receives the sponsorship from government.

“We are appealing to coaches and parents to bring relevant documents such as birth certificates as demanded by Sports Council as part of 2014 Zone VI preparations,” said Luhanga.

He appealed for additional sponsorship to help fund several programmes for MPC. Witness Asima, Rachael Kaunda and Taonele Banda are among the athletes to watch on July 27.
