A Phillip Masiye brace helped Blue Eagles secure a 2-1 win over Dwangwa United at Nankhaka ground in Lilongwe yesterday and a return to the TNM Super League summit.

Having played 24 matches Eagles now have 45 points one ahead of second placed Mafco who have a game in hand.

Dwangwa, have now stagnated on position 12 with 22 points with just three games before they wrap up the season.

The match was a balanced affair. Masiye put the hosts in the lead on the 13th minute before Jack Chiona levelled from a free-kick minutes later.

Eagles failed to take the lead from a penalty after Elijah Kabingu smashed the ball against the bottom of the post.

After recess, both teams came with renewed purpose and created a number of chances, but could not find the winner.

But there was still time for Eagles to break the deadlock. In the 86th minute when they won a freekick just outside the box and Masiye hit a hard and low shot that beat goalkeeper Philmon Barnet.

The resultant celebrations from a handful home supporters and the technical bench showed signs of how relieved Eagles were to collect maximum points.

Eagles general manager Gabriel Chirwa said returning to the top after several weeks would boost their title ambitions.

Dwangwa coach Mcdonald Mtetemera blamed his side for conceding “silly goals.”

However, he was adamant that they can  survive relegation.  n
