It already has 17 trainees—14 young aspiring golfers and three adults.

Speaking during the launch, the new academy’s director Dingaan Chirwa noted that there was no proper entry into golf on the local scene in the recent past.

“Of course, in Lilongwe they go through Chris Kachiguma (who is also national golf coach), but generally almost everyone in Malawi has learnt how to play golf through caddies who are not qualified trainers and golfers end up learning bad habits which limit their success,” said Chirwa.

He said the academy will try to develop golfers to professional tour levels.

“For junior golfers, a solid programme in line with the Long Term Athlete Development [Ltad] model has been put in place. It describes the life-long athlete performance development model and maps out a path of development of athletes from pre-puberty to retirement,” said Chirwa.

He said the dream is to produce a professional golfer by 2020.

He said the lessons will include gym training and helping the aspiring golfers to develop necessary muscles. Training fees per session ranges from K500 to K5 000.
