FC Surestream started their new lease of life in the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Premier Division on an impressive note on Saturday, beating Ndirande Icons 3-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Evirom, who were relegated from the Super League after a season, also started their campaign on a promising note with a 2-1 win over White Eagles at Malawi Police Service (PTS) ground.

Missing the majority of their Under-20 national team players, Surestream subjected Icons to a torment with their trademark pass-and-move style of play to the delight of the small crowd, but it took 29 minutes to score their first goal through Telekeleni Joseph.

Surestream went two up through a penalty converted by Bernard Chimaimba following an infringement. The penalty sparked protest from Icons, which led to their goalkeeper Danvel Chapola being shown the red card after slapping the referee.

From then on, Icons were on the backfoot and had Surestream been sharper in front of goal, they would have scored a deluge of goals. Nevertheless, they struck the third through Tony Biasi.

Icons assistant coach Christopher Kataunde blamed the loss on off-season hangover, saying his team is still rusty. He also said the referee let them down because of the dubious penalty he awarded to Surestream.

Surestream technical adviser Patricio Kulemeka said their maiden game in the Premier Division gave them an insight on what to expect.

Playing earlier at the same venue, Green Hawks and BNC Produsak played out a 2-2 draw.

In the Evirom versus Eagles match, Lyston Chiyembekezo and Frank Kadam’manja were on target for the former Super League side while Ernest Kashoni scored the consolation goal for Eagles. Evirom were taking on Max Bullets at Sedi, Chiradzulu yesterday in their second game.

Nyasa United also got off to a good start with a 3-0 win over Polytechnic. Hope Nyasulu, Elad Chigwetsa and Chisomo Kamulanje scored for Nyasa.
